Self-improvement, Self-discovery, and Self-fun Books

Crazy Quilt, by Paula Paul

I’ll start by confessing that I know Paula Paul. She’s been a teacher, mentor and inspiration of mine for many years. But that’s not why I love Crazy Quilt.

Crazy Quilt is the story of Flora Adams. Although Flora has survived her bout with cancer (minus a breast and hair), her rocky marriage may not. Not quite sure why, Flora leaves her home in Albuquerque and travels to west Texas, supposedly to visit an aunt in Lubbock. Following her heart, or maybe her whims, she takes a detour to the small town where she grew up. There she meets a wide range of beautifully-drawn characters that help Flora find her balance, self-confidence, and most importantly, hope.

It’s hard not to fall in love with Flora; her initial confusion, her courage, her indomitable will. She refuses to conform to what her family and friends expect of her. She is a survivor - of much more than cancer.

When I first read Crazy Quilt, I was in a characterless hotel room, with nothing good on TV. It was too early to go to bed, and since I had to give a presentation early the next morning, it was too late to go out. I picked up the copy Paula had given me at lunch that day, planning to read just a chapter or two and then go to bed.

It was after 3:00 AM before I turned out my light. I just couldn’t put the book down.

I’ve given copies of this book to six other women of all ages and all walks of life, and everyone has the same reaction to it. It’s a story of connection, of hope, and of love. It’s a journey of self-discovery and re-discovery. It’s about strength and acceptance of things that feel unacceptable at first, of feeding your soul today, because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. You owe it to yourself to discover the strength and beauty of Flora Adams - a strength and beauty that will resonate through your own life.
