How to get the most out of coaching

Your coaching appointment is a very special time just for you. It's a space in your life where you get to step back and look at things from different perspectives and explore new options and ideas.

So how can you make the most out of your coaching appointments? After all, you're paying for them, and they're all about you. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Come to your appointments on time. Many coaches (including me) often schedule clients back to back, so if you're late, you'll lose out on coaching time.
  • Bring a topic or issue to be coached on. That way, you and your coach can get right down to business, instead of fumbling around deciding what to work on.
  • Set aside your coaching time as something special and sacred. Find a quiet, private place to talk to your coach where you won't be interrupted or overheard–a place where you can really focus on the coaching rather than be distracted. Don't try and do other things while you're talking to your coach.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for what you need from your coach. And if the coaching is going in a direction that isn't working for you, say so! Speak up, and speak your truth.
  • Also, don't try to be a "good" client by attempting to please your coach for his/her sake. Your coach is a trained professional who is there to serve you, not the other way around. Be honest, open and authentic.
  • Plan on spending some time between calls to work on whatever comes up in your coaching session. There may even be homework!
  • And last, but certainly not least, don't try and be coached on your cell phone while driving! Most coaches (me included) will rightfully refuse to work with you under those circumstances. The last thing any of us wants to hear over the phone is an auto accident!
